Streaming services make your music accessible on a worldwide level. So it’s never been easier for people to discover, access and listen to what you’re creating.

Apple Music, Deezer and YouTube Music are just some of the streaming services on offer. But as an emerging artist, it’s essential your music is on Spotify – and that you take full advantage of Spotify for Artists. This free artist-only tool lets you share your story via a unique profile, provides the stats needed to gain valuable insight into your fans, and offers loads of helpful tips and videos.

As the largest streaming service in the world, Spotify are the undisputed tastemakers of the modern music industry. 160 million active users and 70 million paid subscribers in 65 markets certainly prove this.

Help people find you on Spotify

Spotify search results are based on a mix of current and all-time popularity – but this varies depending on the listener’s personal preferences. The more streams and followers you have, the higher you’ll appear in searches.

There are several things you can do to grab people’s attention on Spotify:

Join Spotify for Artists

If you haven’t already signed up, what are you waiting for? Spotify for Artists gives you total control: style your profile, promote your music and even share the tracks you’re into with fans. All for free. Check our guide for tips.

Create your own artist profile

Your Spotify artist bio is the perfect place to tell fans all about you, your band and reveal your personality and passions.  Shout about your newest release, upcoming tour plans and even sell merch. Don’t forget to create artist playlists to share some of your own musical tastes.

You can now also update your artist image to reflect your current mood or changing look. It’s totally up to you.

Get social with followers

Encouraging your fans to follow you on Spotify via social media is a must. More followers means more exposure, more streams and higher rankings in searches. It also ensures more people see your music, tour dates and anything else you’re sharing on your profile.

Add a follow button

Make it easier for fans to find and follow both your music and your Spotify artist profile by embedding a Spotify follow button in your site. Your followers can then receive notifications about your new releases and gigs happening near them too.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a techie – embedding is a simple cut and paste job.

Post artist playlists

Give your fans insight into the music that inspires you by posting an artist playlist. In addition to posting your treasured tracks, also champion your own music and other new artist you love.

How to get on a playlist

1.5 billion – that’s how many playlists Spotify and its users have created. That’s a lot of opportunity to attract the attention of influencers, accumulate followers and catapult your music into the universe.

Spotify analyses these playlists to learn what people like. Their algorithms then populate each user’s unique Daily Mix, Release Radar and Discover Weekly playlists with recommended artists based on this.

While Spotify’s playlists are curated by their algorithms or in-house music editors, there are several things you can do to boost your chances of getting on one:

Get verified

Being verified gives you credibility and it’s easy to do – simply access Spotify for Artists. Spotify algorithms prioritise verified accounts. Even better, you no longer need a 250-minimum of followers to be verified.

Focus on unofficial Spotify playlists.

You typically need a large following to be featured on an official Spotify playlist. However, being verified can help put you on Spotify influencers’ radars so you’re chosen for their unofficial playlists.  Promoting playlists of the influencers you’re interested in and asking fans to follow them is another way to gain an influencer’s attention.

Get social

Remember to promote your Spotify profile on social to raise awareness and increase your follower numbers. This includes linking to your profile in your ‘about’ sections and offering up fresh content like new releases and playlists.

Promote Spotify on your site

In addition to promoting your Spotify profile and playlists on social, also remember to promote them on your website too. Embedding a follow button lets fans easily follow you. Also think about including a widget so fans can easily listen to your music on Spotify too.

Changing your Spotify profile

You change. Your music changes. And so should your profile. With Spotify for Artists, making updates is easy.

In the app

  • Open the app and go to the profile tab.
  • Scroll down to ‘About’ to update your bio.
  • You can link to other artists, albums or playlists you like or are associated with on Spotify by using the ‘@’ symbol. Got a Wikipedia page? Great! Add a link to it too.
  • Remember you have 1,500 characters to play with. Have fun – but make’em count.

On the desktop:

Open your Spotify for Artists dashboard, go to ‘Profile’, then find the text field under ‘Artist Bio’. From here, it’s the exact same as making updates in the app.
